How far does the S.U.R.F. Zone extend?

The S.U.R.F. zone is centered within the downtown area, with coverage available outdoors for several blocks in all directions (see coverage map). Look for the S.U.R.F. zone icon on storefront windows or doors. Signal strength indoors will vary due to building design and construction materials.

What wireless technology does the system use?

The network utilizes the 802.11b standard for wireless communications, offering speeds up to 11 Mbps.

What hardware do I need to connect?

Any wireless-enabled device, such as a notebook computer or PDA that features a wireless-compliant 802.11b wireless Ethernet card (or built-in wireless capabilities compatible with the 802.11b standard). Wireless cards are available at most major electronics or computer stores.

Do I need special software to connect?

No. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or any other popular web browser will work just fine. Make sure your web browser is not set to use a proxy server. For Internet Explorer, this setting can be found in the Windows Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.

Is access limited?

When you open your browser for the first time, follow the logon instructions to gain access and get surfing. Access is available 24/7. You may use the system for up to 1 hour and may be able to log back on after a 30 minute waiting period.
